Computex 2004 Review

World's second largest IT exhibition, COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2004, closed on June 5th, 2004. According to statistics by the organizers, the number of professional international visitors who came to visit during the five days of the event totaled to be 26,222, representing a growth of 17.85% from last year and the number also broke the record high number in 2002. In addition, total number of domestic visitors for COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2004 is 82,602 with 531 international journalists; these numbers have set a new record as well. According to the visitor origin analysis, top five countries where international visitors come from are the U.S.A. (3,856 people), Japan (3,335 people), Hong Kong (1,822 people), Korea (1,656 people), and Singapore (895 people) respectively. Other major countries include Germany, Mainland China, Malaysia, Austria, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Canada.

Looking around the exhibition halls, it is easy to see other product development trends of domestic companies. First, it is the all-in-one multi-function trend; for example, the Bluetooth wireless headset from FIC is the integration of Bluetooth, MP3 player, and headset. Second, it is the idea of being more environmentally friendly; for example, the rechargeable wireless optical mouse from KYE Systems, which includes four batteries so that users can cut down the costs spent on batteries and also solve the problem of environment pollution. Next, it is the critical criteria in digital home, the friendly human-machine interface; for example, the WLAN chipset from Realtek has integrated in it a friendly human-machine interface supporting zero configurations. Another example would be the digital home software product, PowerCinema 3, from Cyberlink, which emphasizes its advantages of easy connection to other home entertainment devices for view audio or video files without complex TCP/IP network setup.

The five-day COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2004 has ended with success on June 5th. Even great successful than before. Centralion is  appreciated customers' visit. We hoped that you have enjoyed it and gained what you need in the fair ground.

European Union has adopted a new directive - RoHs--

The European Union has adopted a new directive, the Restriction of Hazardous Substances, known as RoHS or ¡§Lead-free¡¨ legislation. This bans the use of certain substances in electrical and electronic equipment products after July 2006. The substances refer to not only Lead but also Cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).

While the implementation deadlines form part of EU legislation, the need to comply will evolve globally. Japanese manufacturers have been reducing lead levels for 3 or 4 years and, in the USA, California has already passed legislation to fall approximately in line with the EU timescales. It is unlikely that electronics manufacturers will make "lead free" components for Europe and lead-based components for the rest of the world.
